All Cross-Country, All the Time

It’s kind of an accepted truth that in the winter in Norway, a huge amount of TV air time is dedicated to showing cross-country skiing competitions.  After all, it is very much the national pastime (I’ve heard that over 50% of Norwegians cross-country ski, and that includes everyone from age 0 to 120).  However, I have to admit that cross-country skiing isn’t always the most exciting sport to watch live televised footage.

Thankfully, it’s summer, so we can watch other exciting televised sports like golf!  Okay, I think I would rather watch cross-country skiing than golf.  Highlights are fine, but a whole tournament gets a bit tedious.  Well, thankfully NRK is there to appease me!  Yes, it’s the peak of summer, and our table fans are having a tough time trying to keep up with the incredible heat, but this past weekend, there on the TV was cross-country skiing!

Some Norwegians love cross-country so much that they don’t like to give it up for the summer.  This led to the popularity of roller skiing.  Up until now, I’ve only seen prople out roller skiing on the roads and in the parks, but sure enough, NRK was televising live coverage of an international (there was a German guy among all the Norwegians) roller skiing competition!  I don’t think any of the spectators had cowbells, though!

WOW! Just like you, I see people out roller skiing all the time – but I’ve never seen a roller skiing competition! I bet if someone organized one though, there would be hundreds of Alaskans there! :)
