Annual Eurovision WTF Awards

Sunday, 24 May 2009 -- 3:00 pm

In response to Shane’s comment about Norway’s winning Eurovision song, I think I ought to show it in the proper light.  “Suck” is clearly a relative term.  “Fairytale” may not be the best song ever, but it’s not all that bad.  Especially when you see what it was up against!

For a few examples of what makes Eurovision so much fun (at least in my opinion), I offer you the 2009 entries by Hungary and Bulgaria!  They win my Annual Eurovision WTF Award.

2009 Eurovision WTF Runner-Up:
Hungary – “Dance With Me” by Zoli Ádok

(They seem to pull these videos down quite often, so if the embedded version doesn’t work, search YouTube for Eurovision Hungary 2009.)

Sadly, the tear-away costumes and well-endowed backup dancers weren’t enough to send Hungary to the final.

2009 Eurovision WTF Winner:
Bulgaria – “Illusion” by Krassimir Avramov

There are no words to describe this.  None.

And yet Hanna Pakarinen can only get 17th place? I detect an anti-finn bias! :)

Just because the other entries suck more, it doesn’t mean Fairytale *doesn’t* suck! :)

I actually liked the backup dancers in Fairytale. Just because I don’t know what the heck they are doing doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate them doing whatever it is well. I also have no qualms with the fiddling. However, the lyrics are just AWFUL. Even now, I am full of awe at their awfulness. And his facial expressions annoy me as well.

To be fair on the lyrics, the above ones have sucky lyrics too. So maybe there is something lost in the translation to English from Norwish or whatever silly umlaut filled language your people speak. ;)

Okay, all that being said I grudgingly admit to catching myself singing, “I’m in looove with a fairy taaaaale” no less than 6 times!!

There’s definitely no anti-Finn bias! Hanna Pakarinen performed the year it was hosted in Finland, thanks to Finland’s 2006 win, when Lordi broke the record for the highest score with a whopping 292 points. (With one of the coolest Eurovision performances ever, I might add!)
