Fascinating Football Commercials – And it’s not even the Superbowl!

Fast Food CommercialsOn Sunday night, Lucas and I went to Tara and Tor’s house to watch the playoff game between the Colts and the Jets  (They have an NFL international subscription to watch the live CBS telecast online).  Although I’m not a huge football fan, I did enjoy watching the game.  However, like so many Superbowl viewers, I was even more interested in the commercials!

It has been a long time since I’ve watched much American television, and even then it probably wasn’t anything as noteworthy as an NFL playoff game.  The commercials fascinated me.

First of all, it’s always a little weird to be able to understand the commercials, since I’ve gotten used to Norwegian ads on TV and at the movies.  Second, there were beer commercials.  I’m pretty sure that you’re not allowed to advertise alcohol on television in Norway (though I could be wrong about that).  Third, and most shocking, were the fast food commercials.

The thing about fast food commercials is that they tend to mention the price of their latest deal.  There was a Burger King commercial advertising a double cheeseburger that cost a dollar and a Domino’s Pizza ad selling two medium pizzas for $5.99.  I’m sure you can imagine where this is going.

A double cheeseburger for a dollar?  That’s less than 6 NOK!  The same sandwich here costs at least six times as much!  But the pizza almost made me cry.  35 NOK for two 2-topping medium pizzas!  Okay, Domino’s isn’t my favorite (sorry, Lucas), but it’s not bad!  And considering a pizza that size here costs at least 100 NOK, it was just mind-boggling.  From that point on, I swore to myself that I wouldn’t convert any more of the prices.

On the upside, I suppose this means that I’ve finally gotten used to the cost of living, and I shouldn’t be eating fast food burgers and pizza anyway.  And of course, it did make for some entertaining television!
