There are a lot of subtle differences between Europe and the US (and China), and there are things that are particular to Norway: the emphasis on family, the early shop closings, the prices. However, we expected all of these things and aren’t all that surprised when we encounter them.
The first thing that’s truly surprised me about Norway? Cheese and jam sandwiches. I don’t know why, but I just can’t wrap my head around it. White cheese and fruit jam are
a common sandwich combination. It’s something about the mix of sweet and savory. Along the same lines, the Norwegians question our mix of peanut butter and jam. After all, it’s just mixing sweet and sweet!
I have tried a bite of a friend’s cheese-jam sandwich, but I just can’t get over it mentally. It just seems too strange! But I’ll try again to get over my stigma!
