Obama’s coming to visit!

So I had a random post scheduled to go up this evening (it was about flags; I love flags), but I have to bump it to next week, because they just announced the Nobel Peace Prize!  And Obama won it?!

I love Obama just as much as the next American ex-pat, and I am extremely excited that he’s coming to my hosttown, but I don’t really get it.  Thumbing through the earlier press coverage of the nominations, he wasn’t considered a front-runner at all.  In fact, most sources barely even mentioned his nomination before he actually landed the prize!

While I’m certainly happy for Obama and proud of him and for my country, I (like everyone else in the world) really don’t understand the committee’s decision.  Even in the official announcement it’s hard to find actual reasons and supporting arguments.  The text could be describing any Democrat whose been in the White House in the past few decades.  I personally would have been happier seeing the award go to Simi Samar or Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad.

But I’m certainly excited that Obama is coming to Oslo.  I know that I won’t see him (unless I camp out in Rådhusplassen for a week before the ceremony), but you never know.  Perhaps he’ll stop off and visit some of his local campaign supporters!
