World Accent Game
Thursday, 28 August 2008 -- 7:55 pmI came up with a few interesting “Life in Norway” insights to share over the weekend, but I seem to have forgotten them. So instead, I’ll post another interesting link I’ve come across recently:
The World Accent Game
See how well you can identify speakers’ accents from all over the world.
I did surprisingly badly, though there were two that I was pleased with myself for getting right. I was a bit ashamed that I failed to recognize a US accent, though. I’ll post my results (with spoilers) for discussion in the comments, so don’t read them until you’ve played for yourself!

Okay, spoiler alert. I warned you not to read this until you’ve played!
I’m glad that I got the American accent from Indianapolis right! I didn’t notice anything to make it sound particularly Hoosier, but it was very midwestern. Had the options included any other midwest locations, I might have failed. Thankfully, the choices were all fairly southern, so that left only Indianapolis.
The other one that I was very happy to get was Hungary. As soon as the guy started speaking, I thought, “Hey! He sounds just like my Hungarian officemate!” and sure enough, Hungary was an option.
The American accent that I didn’t get was the girl from Miami. She did something weird at the end when she asked, “Can you guess where I’m from?” Her “from” was rising in tone with a commonwealth kind of sound to it. Up until that, it was super American, but I got tripped up on the last bit and thought she might be South African. I’m guessing she’s one of those people like me who has a bad habit to break into accents that aren’t one’s own.

I got 5! I only missed one or two of the American ones, but it was a lot more difficult than I was expecting.

I think I got 7 right, plus a few of the bonuses. So my score was somewhere around 25.
Lucas did slightly better, but he seemed to get most of the ones that I missed and missed the ones I got! I wonder if there’s some reason behind that (besides chance).
